Note on First Nations Casting

In our adaption, Albert is an Indigenous tracker brought in by local police to help search for the missing girls. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Australian law enforcement often employed Indigenous trackers who, due to their deep knowledge of the land and expertise in interpreting subtle changes in the environment, were exceptionally skilful at tracking fugitives, lost persons, and criminals. Despite Albert’s knowledge and skill, he remains a First Nations man confronted by the early days of colonial Australia and the widespread dispossession of First Nations people. Removed from his ancestral home, separated from his sister, and forced to work for the police for fear of worse treatment, Albert continues to wrestle with his lack of freedom in a country where sovereignty of his people was never ceded.

Due to the role of Albert and First Nations themes woven through this musical we have been committed to including Indigenous Australian voices and perspectives from its inception. This has included ongoing dialogue with our First Nations Dramaturg, Nick Harvey-Doyle, working with First Nations Australian actors, and consultation with Indigenous community members.

We are thankful for the three First Nations Australian actors who have helped develop and refine the character of Albert: Googoorewon Knox, Lincoln Elliott, and Callan Purcell. We are also grateful for the support from Australian Consulate-General in New York, who provided funding for Lincoln Elliott’s travel expenses to attend a 29-hour reading in 2024, culminating in a public concert at Joe’s Pub.

We further acknowledge the following people for their generous time in being consulted on the creation of this character: Della Rae Morrison, Aunty Julieanne Axford, Aunty Gail Smith, Aunty Donna Ingram, Brittanie Shipway, Glenn Shea, and Andrea James. Our story is richer and bolder for your voices and meaningful collaboration.

It has always been our intention to cast a First Nations actor from Australia to play Albert for our world premiere production in New York City. We made our best efforts to make this happen, casting an actor and lodging an ultimately successful visa application. However, due to a family emergency, the actor pulled out days before rehearsals were due to start, leaving the production with insufficient time to recommence the visa process with an alternative First Nations Australian actor.

We are cognisant of the historical practice of non-Indigenous actors performing Indigenous roles in theatre around the world, despite the diverse breadth of available First Nations talent. First Nations representation remains a critical part of our production, and we are thrilled that Bradley Lewis, a proud Native American performer belonging to the Acoma tribe, will be playing the role of Albert for the first time.

Nick Harvey-Doyle, First Nations Dramaturg.
